Ford Creates Augmented Reality App to Experience New Fusion

Ford's understanding of augmented reality seems a little skewed. It has just released an app for Android and iOS that teases the new 2013 Fusion. The car will not get a full reveal until the North American International Auto Show in early January.

The app makes users take a picture of a Ford insignia somewhere in the real world to start it. Then users play a game of driving a camouflaged Fusion through a course that launches short videos teasing the new car. Each day a new video is unlocked to further tease the new car until the NAIAS when the full car will be revealed in the app.

“We want to have an exciting and interactive way to build anticipation leading up to the reveal of the all-new Fusion. The app allows consumers to learn about the advanced technology and design of the car in a fun and easy-to-use way while reinforcing the transformative nature of the Fusion,” said Samantha Hoyt, Fusion Marketing manager.

While the app sounds like a novel way of teasing a new car, its not really augmented reality. Augmented reality would be if you help up your camera, and it turned every car you see into a new Fusion. Still it is great to see new ways for companies to hype their new models.
