Formula 1 Teams Approve Penalty Point System

The proposed Formula 1 penalty points system has been approved by a majority of the teams, which means that it just needs to be voted on by the FIA World Council in June to be added to the 2014 sporting regulations. The system will allow race stewards to apply penalty points to drivers' racing licenses instead of fining them. A level of points for various infractions will be decided if the measure is voted into the rules.

If a driver receives 12 points within a 12-month period, then he will incur a one-race ban. Any points on a drivers' license after 12 months will be erased. 

"From what I saw, I don't think it will be so different to what we saw until now.

"Drivers who are creating problems will suffer more than the others. What I did all my career was not be involved in this, so it is OK," said Felipe Massa. 

The teams also rejected a proposed penalty laps system where the stewards would have been able to punish a driver with a penalty lap for an infraction judged worse than warranting a stop-and-go penalty. A majority of the teams did not agree to it.
