Just 2% of Cars Stolen by Being Hot Wired; Key Theft More Common

If you do not want your car stolen, guard your keys

You no longer need to worry about your car being hot wired and stolen but protect your keys. UK insurance company LV has found that only 1 in 50 (2%) cars stolen today are hot wired.

The popularity of hot wiring cars has been on the wane for decades. In 2007, it still happened in 20% of stolen cars.

Today, 66% of car thefts in the UK happen because the keys are stolen, and in 40% of those cases the keys are stolen because the owner's home is burglarized.

“Improvements in car security mean that criminals now place a greater emphasis on stealing the keys rather than forcing the ignition," said LV car insurance managing director Jonh O’Roarke.

The downside to all of this is that, according to LV, the average car is stolen in about 10 seconds now compare to 60 seconds when crooks had to hot wire it.
