SUV at its Mirafiori factory in Turin. The factory will require a €1 billion upgrade before production can begin at the end of 2014. However, the factory’s 5,300 laid off workers will not be rehired until the factory is upgraded.

Fiat says that the upgrades will start immediately.

"The era of uncertainty over the future of Mirafiori is finally finished," said Fismic union leader Roberto Di Maulo.
