next season is far from certain after two retirements and just one podium so far this season. Massa’s contract with Ferrari expires at the end of the season.
Massa has a tendency to go on long streaks of success followed by long slumps. Last season, he went on a rally from the Hungarian Grand Prix to the end of the season and scored points in every race, including two podiums. Before that that he had scored points in just four of ten races.
This season, he scored points in the first three races and a podium in Spain but has struggled since then by retiring twice in the last four races.
Massa currently sits in seventh in the World Drivers’ Championship, which is the same as he finished the season last year.
He has only finished better than his teammate three times in the 2012 season and so far this season, and in all of those instances Alonso had retired from the race.
"The future? We will talk about that further down the line as there's no hurry.
"I hope he will soon secure the results that will show his talent to the full, such as the great starts he pulled off at the last two grands prix,” said Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo.
Montezemolo’s words were echoed by Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali.
"Felipe is fully aware he can count on our total confidence in him,” he said.
