young driver test in 2009 and tested for Sauber again in November 2012.
“Esteban has already been part of the team for a long time and we have followed his career very closely. In 2010 we signed him up as an affiliated driver, and in 2011 and 2012 he was our test and reserve driver. We mapped out his path to Formula One step by step. Esteban has great talent and now he’s ready to take the leap," said Sauber Team Principal Monisha Kaltenborn.
Kobayashi mounted an aggressive campaign to stay in Formula 1 next season. He collectied about €8 million from sponsors and a Web site he created for fan contributions to offer teams to hire him, but it was not enough.
"Unfortunately, the time was still short and I am not able to secure the seat with [a] competitive F1 team for 2013.
"I start to look [at] what is the best option for 2013 and also 2014. My main priority is to secure the competitive F1 seat in 2014. I have no interests to race any other categories," said Kobayashi.
