at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 20.
Ford has not announced power figures for the new engine yet, but says that performance will be near that to its 1.6-liter EcoBoost, which has 150hp, but with improved fuel economy and emissions. The advantage is that the new engine will be eligible for tax breaks in some countries.
“The new 1.5-liter unit further extends our EcoBoost promise of economical driving in terms of both fuel efficiency and – in some markets – tax savings," said Ford head of powertrain engineering Joe Bakaj.
The engine is completely made from aluminum with the exhaust manifold integrated into the engine to save weight.
The new engine will be the fifth EcoBoost in Ford's lineup and built at its engine factory in Romania. Ford builds its EcoBoost turbocharged engines at six factories in Europe, Asia and North America that can build a combined 1.6 million engines a year.
