Aston Martin is developing a new LMP1 race car in order to compete at the 2011 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. According to the brand the car is being designed to fight for the top places.
The new car is being developed with an Aston Martin open cockpit monocoque chassis and a new purpose-designed race engine.
Aston Martin believes that under the new Automobile Club De L’Ouest (ACO) technical regulations for 2011 the brand will have an opportunity to fight for victory at the 24 Hour race. Although some of the main competitors are diesel-engined, Aston Martin will lineup with a petrol-powered car that will be designed to take the best advantage of ACO’s regulations.
Aston Martin Chairman, David Richards said: “Having won the GT category twice at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008 and the Le Mans Series outright in 2009, we still want to achieve our ultimate goal of winning the 24 Hour race overall to bring the title back to Britain.
Richards confirms that ACO has assured that the new regulations for 2011 will balance the performance of these new cars. “Under these circumstances we have been prepared to develop Aston Martin’s first purpose-built racing chassis and engine for more than 50 years,” says the Aston Martin Chairman.
With the development of the new chassis and engine already taking place for several months at Aston Martin Racing’s headquarters in Banbury, UK, the first of a limited number of six cars will run in early 2011.
