Audi has made the public debut of the new R8 Spyder at the New York Motor Show. The sibling of the second-generation R8 Coupé is a core rival of the recently facelifted Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet and will reach the market in late 2016.
The mid-engined flagship model measures 4426mm in length, 1940mm in width and 1244mm in height, which is 14mm shorter and 36mm wider than
the previous R8 Spyder. The model continues to ride on the same 1650mm wheelbase. Compared to the previous generation Audi states that the new Spyder has a 50% increased overall rigidity and is 113kg lighter.
The new R8 Spyder soft-top is fully automatic an opens and closes in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. Its structure folds beneath a dedicated tonneau cover behind the two-seat cabin. The rear window can also be automatically extended and retracted within the rear bulkhead.
Powered by the same mid-mounted, naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine as the R8, the R8 Spyder has an output of 540hp and 540Nm of torque. Engine is combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which sends power to the wheels via the quattro all-wheel drive system. It can reach the 100km/h mark in 3.6 seconds, just 0.1 seconds slower than the R8 Coupé. Top speed is 318km/h. Combined consumption announced is 11.7l/100km with CO2 emissions of 277g/km.
The more powerful R8 Spyder Plus should reach the line-up of the model by the end of 2016.
