. Just like the Mustang the Camaro will also be heading to Europe.
The new Camaro generation has a new set of dimensions which immediately differentiates it from the outgoing fifth generation. It is 57mm shorter, 20mm narrower and 28mm lower. It was built based on GM's Alpha platform and features a 60kg lighter structure than the previous model. Kerb weight of the new model has also been reduced by 90kg.
The engine lineup of the Camaro takes the Chevrolet model to new performance benchmarks but it is also makes it more efficient than ever. The base model is powered by a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that produces 275hp and 400Nm of torque. It takes the car to 60mph in less than six seconds and GM estimates an average consumption of 7.8l/100km, making it the most efficient Camaro ever.
Another new engine making its debut on the Camaro is a 3.6-litre V6 petrol with 335hp and 385Nm of torque. The new power unit includes cylinder deactivation technology for the first time.
Both engines will be combined with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional new eight-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The new Camaro SS will be the most powerful version at launch. It will be powered by the same engine featured on the Corvette Stingray, the 6.2-litre small block V8 with 455hp and 617Nm of torque. The SS also gets cylinder deactivation along with direct injection and variable valve timing.
Design speaking, the new Camaro has kept its signature image with the cross-shaped grille. However the more than 350 hours of wind tunnel testing has given it a more fastback profile towards the rear. It gets wider wheel arches for a more aggressive appearance and its aerodynamic performance has been increased with the help of a new ‘air curtain’ on the front fascia. This feature guides the air around the wheels to reduce drag. Bonnet air vents have also been added.
For the interior Chevrolet has given the Camaro a redesigned centre console, but maintained the same signature instrument cluster, with analogue dials along with an 8in information screen. On the centre console there is another 8in screen which displays infotainment functions and serves as an interface for GM’s MyLink system.
The new Chevrolet Camaro will be hitting the market later this year in the US. Arrival in Europe should only take place on the first half of 2016.
