. The current speculation is that a concept could be shown sometime next year but production will not start until 2016. The next generation will be smaller and more efficient, and it will likely switch to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

“We will always produce a Z-car, but to make the next model more relevant in the current economic and environmental climate, it will need to use a four-cylinder engine," said Nissan Vice President Andy Palmer.

Even if Nissan uses an existing engine, it certainly has options. There is the 1.6 DIG-T from the JukeJuke NismoNissan Juke NismoJapan, 2013 > present5 photos

. Either engine could probably take a little more boost to increase power. There is also the possibility that Nissan will use one of the new engines that it will build in partnership with DaimlerDaimlerDaimlerGermany, 1889 > present12 models

To keep weight down, expect the next Z-car to use more aluminum and high strength steel but probably no composites for its price point.

"We may also offer a six-cylinder version of the next Z-car, but only in very limited numbers," said Palmer.

Historically, the Z has been more of a sporty GT than a lightweight sports coupe. A lighter, more dynamic Z will be an interesting challenge for Nissan's marketers.
