Super 2000. The R5 is designed for tarmac and gravel rallies. It will go on sale and begin customer competition in the second half of 2013.

The R5 class was created by the FIA to make racing cheaper in the S200 class. Peugeot is required to build 25,000 208 R5s. All of the cars in the class must have all-wheel drive, a five-speed manual, no center differential and long travel suspension. The cars in the class have a minimum weight of 1200kg and a maximum price of €180,000 excluding taxes.

For the R5, Peugeot widened the 208's track, added 18in wheels and a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with 280hp. It is a tune of the same engine in the RCZRCZPeugeot RCZFrance, 2010 > present22 versions

Racing Cup. The 208 R5 has a shell that weighs 40kg less than the outgoing 207 S2000. It also has a longer wheelbase and short overall length.

"Based on an optimization of costs. The regulations impose, among other things, a maximum price for certain parts and technical limitations such as a minimum weight of components of the chassis and engine. In addition, a certain number of components of the vehicle must be similar [to the production version]," said Peugeot Sport Technical Manager Bertrand Vallat.

The 208 R5 will eligible for competition in the Intercontinental Rally Championship, European Rally Championship and many national rally championships.
