Wolfgang Hatz, member of the Porsche executive board in charge of research and development, announced today that Porsche is working on a plug-in hybrid that will be ready for sale in the near future.
“With the PanameraPorsche Panamera S HybridGermany, 2011 > present6 photos
and the Cayenne, Porsche has already successfully launched two hybrid models on the market. The sales figures for the Porsche Cayenne S HybridPorsche Cayenne S HybridGermany, 2010 > present3 photos
for 2011 are more than twice as high as the figures of all our competitors combined in this market segment,” said Hatz.
Hatz reassured that internal combustion engines will continue to be important for Porsche's future.
In addition to the two current hybrid models, Porsche's next supercar, the 918 Spyder will also use hub-mounted electric motors to create an all-wheel drive vehicle.
Rumors began in March that Porsche might offer a plug-in hybrid version of the Panamera as early as 2014. Depending on how Porsche tunes the car, it could offer larger electric motors to increase power and performance, or it could simply use the increased battery capacity to give the car better economy and a longer electric range.
