. The news comes according to Porsche’s manager of drivetrain development, Dr. Thomas Casper.

“I can’t tell you the exact month, but sometime in 2014, perhaps at the end,” said Dr. Casper.

The engine will be used in the base versions of the Macan, Boxster and Cayman. Power is expected to be less than 300hp to differentiate it from the Macan’s turbocharged V6 powerplants. The four-cylinder is rumored to used a boxer, opposed-cylinder layout, and may be somewhat related to the engine that Porsche is using in its new LMP1 car.
