Porsche Plans New Model to Take on Ferrari

Porsche is not a company to just rest on its laurels. Barely a week after introducing the next generation 911, Porsche chief Executive Matthias Müller revealed in an interview with the Suddeutsche Zeitung that the company is in the planning stages for a model that would directly take on Ferrari. 

"It has always irritated me that the 911 stops at around €250,000 and the 918 picks up at €750,000. In between Ferrari is relatively comfortable and without competition. We need to be there,” Müller said. 

Müller said that Porsche is still in the planning stages for a model that is inspired by the Porsche 959 and will retail between €250,000 and €400,000.

He did not go into any detail about what it means to be inspired by the 959. It could indicate that this new model will be larger and more GT-like than the 911 while using cutting-edge technology. It could also be more literal and indicate Porsche is planning a car with all-wheel drive and twin turbos. If Porsche intends on competing with Ferrari expect power to be in the 600hp range with 0-100km/h times around three seconds. 

Also in the interview, Müller discussed the future of the relationship between Volkswagen and Ferrari Porsche. He said that the two companies will continue to work together on sharing parts for its models, including the 911. 

"There are components that have no real influence on the character of a car,” he said to reassure Porsche fans that the brand will not be diluted.
