Porsche will be showing at the Geneva Motor Showing, opening on Thurday, a high-performance mid-engined concept sports car with ultra-efficient, low-emission drive technology: the 918 Spyder.
According to Porsche the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid prototype is a combination of high tech racing features and electro-mobility. Besides having a low fuel consumption of 3 l/100km, representing CO2 emissions of 70g/km, the 918 Spyder still maintains the super sports car performance with acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h.
The pug-in hybrid is powered by a V8 engine that develops more than 500 bhp as well as electric motors located the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 bhp (160 kW). Its power is transmitted to the wheel through a seven-speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungs-getriebe.
The electric motors are powered by a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery, located behind the passenger cell. The battery can be fully charged in the regular electricity network but can also be fed with energy resulting from the usage of brakes, which can be used for extra acceleration.
The 918 Sptder can run in four modes: E-Drive, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid and Race Hybrid. The E-Drive mode runs only on electric power, with a range of up to 25 km. The Hybrid mode uses the three engines and the other two modes focus on performance.
