Schumacher’s return confirmed

Schumacher’s return confirmed

Mercedes GP has confirmed that Michael Schumacher will drive for the team in next year’s Formula One World Championship. The seven-time world champion that will turn 41 in January says he will be racing to fight for the title.

Since last summer when Schumacher almost stepped in to substitute Ferrari’s Felipe Massa after the accident that caused him to miss the end of the season, many rumors have come to public of a possible return to the F1 paddock.

After Brawn GP failed to secure Jenson Button for the 2010 season, Michael Schumacher became the favourite name to replace him. Schumacher seems to have recovered his enthusiasm for F1.

Since he left the tracks back in 2006 he maintained a place as an ambassador for the Ferrari team and appeared fully content to be away from the pressures and strains of racing in motor sport's top category.

"The motivation I think is pretty straightforward," Schumacher said. "The call I got from Ross at the end of November concerning the chance to go racing, Mercedes being involved, I felt great.

The only detail separating Schumacher’s return to the tracks was his neck injury, that prevented him to replace Massa, but according to German driver “Before I gave a final okay I made sure that I was sure myself, and I can say 100 per cent the neck is no further issue.”

Running for the 2010 title

Three years after his retirement Michael Schumacher returns to F1 tracks but his spirit hasn’t changed. The German driver says he will be aiming for an eighth Formula One title.

With the results from Brawn GP in the last season Schumacher is aiming to add more wins and championship to his tally.

“It [Mercedes GP] is a team that has won both championships this year,” he said. “With Mercedes Benz as a strong partner, our aim can only be to fight for the championship.”
