Sebastian Vettel storms to second successive Canada pole

Sebastian Vettel will start on pole position for the second successive year in Canada after dominating qualifying in bright conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Lewis Hamilton was unable to challenge but will start beside Vettel with the rejuvenated Ferrari of Fernando Alonso close behind.

Mark Webber will be disappointed to be over half a second behind his team-mate but still starts from the second row.

Nico Rosberg is the leading Mercedes again but Michael Schumacher will start in ninth after he felt he was impeded on his last flying lap.

Felipe Massa’s upturn in form will be a real boon for Ferrari as they seek another manufacturer’s world championship and he will start in sixth position, seemingly having been able to bring the set-up knowledge that he gained in Monaco the streets of Montreal.

Romain Grosjean again out-qualified his team-mate and will start in seventh for Renault ahead of the hard-charging Paul di Resta who had said that he felt Q3 was possible in the lead up to qualifying. He will wonder if greater things await as Ferrari look to the future.

Meanwhile the torrid weekend continued for Jenson Button who will line his McLaren up in tenth position after he parked in his garage with three minutes of the session remaining.

Pastor Maldonado clouted the wall with seconds to go to send Jenson Button through to the third part of qualifying for the first time in three races, leaving Kamui Kabayashi in 11^th position. The Venezuelan driver will start in 17^th position.

The Force India’s have been fast through the speed traps all weekend but that was not enough to send Nico Hulkenberg through as he only managed 13^th.

Kimi Raikkonen did not look comfortable all the way through qualifying and will start in 12^th as understeer blighted his afternoon. #Daniel Ricciardo managed 14^th in front of Sergio Perez and Bruno Senna who still does not look comfortable in the Williams.

Jean-Eric Vergne will again be disappointed not to make Q2, with both Caterham drivers out-qualifying him on this occasion.

Pedro de la Rosa will be pleased to have out-qualified both Marussia drivers while Narain Karthikeyan brings up the rear.
