“Speaking very frankly, I can say this is one of many ideas we have, to build a car below Panamera. But it would be a difficult decision, because Porsche has just taken a huge step getting into the Macan market — not just developing the car but doubling the factory capacity, including the body shop and paint shop. It has been a huge effort for the whole company,” said Porsche boss Matthias Muller.

Rumors of a smaller Panamera go back to at least 2012. At the time, it was rumored to be ready for 2016 or 2017 and use Porsche’s range of V6 engines.

Porsche sold 162,000 cars in 2013 and has a goal of selling 200,000 cars by 2018. The Macan alone is expected to push Porsche above its goal with 50,000 estimated sales at full production, but that is not stopping it from thinking about the future.
