Study Shows that Buyers are not Interested in Electric Vehicles

Study Shows that Buyers are not Interested in Electric Vehicles

The UK-based Green Car Web Site is reporting that a study done by Trend Tracker shows that consumers are not yet ready to buy full electric cars and hybrids are also unpopular.

Trend Tracker interviewed 1,000 people in the UK face-to-face in their homes about future car buying decisions. The results show that only 2% of respondents plan to buy a hybrid in the future and none plan to buy a full electric car. Of males 2% said that they would buy a hybrid and 1% of women said that they planned on buying one.

Petrol and diesel were the most popular fuels with 45% of those surveyed wanting a petrol-powered car and 42% wanting a diesel. Men were much more likely to want to buy a diesel in the future with 39% while only 28% of women want a diesel car. For petrol the breakdown is that 53% of women want it in their next car versus 43% of men.

Women are far more likely to want a low emissions car at 63% versus 53% of men.

What is causing buyers in the UK not to want hybrid or electric cars? Buyers clearly are willing to buy low emissions cars but have an aversion to electric and even hybrid vehicles.

It's probably because the men of Top Gear frown upon hybrid and electric cars.

Range on them is still too low, lack of charging points, and not ideal for everyone to charge at home. Hydrogen fuel cells are the way to go! :)

I like the idea of electric cars, but they need to improve the batteries!

@timcal1968 Agreed, but it's a shame. I would really like to have one of these if it really was easier to recharge

This study says that people don't even have an interest in hybrids in the UK too. As someone in the US, there are a ton of hybrid cars here. Nearly every major company has at least one in their range ...

Does Top Gear really have such a strangle hold over the buying public? I find the boys entertaining but would never look to them for car buying advice.

I like them as well, but don't give them that much credit. Bottom line is hybrids are expensive and have poorer performances. Petrol and diesel cars are more and more frugal. Also, Mercedes and BMW do...
