Suzuki debut Kizashi EcoCharge and Apex in New York

Suzuki has revealed two new concepts based off its Kizashi sports sedan at the 2011 New York International Auto Show; the Ecocharge and the Apex.

The EcoCharge features a gas-electric drivetrain to improve fuel economy by 25 percent over the standard Kizashi sedan. Its 2.0 litre inline-four gas engine outputs 106 kW and 173 Nm, and combines with a 15 kW electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery. It also features other fuel saving technologies such as regenerative braking, automatic engine shut-off, fuel cut-off during deceleration events and low-rolling resistance tyres. Transmission is a six-speed automatic.

Styling on the exterior sees the EcoCharge receive a unique luminescent white satin paint, specialised headlights and LED fog lights. On the inside, seat materials that result in 80 percent fewer emissions during production have been utilised.

Steve Younan, Director of Automotive Marketing and Product Planning for American Suzuki Motor Corporation, said of the EcoCharge: “We are continuing to study the virtues of the gas-electric technology found in the Kizashi EcoCharge Concept. Our basic concept was to attain substantial gains in fuel economy without the traditional sacrifices in drivability required with today’s mid-size hybrid sedans. The proof of our concept is that the Kizashi EcoCharge has the capability to deliver a 25% fuel economy gain in real-world driving through an electric charge to the powertrain system while still retaining the production Kizashi’s dynamic handling and braking advantages that make it a standout category performer.”

Meanwhile, the Apex is a turbocharged concept that represents a link between Suzuki cars and motorcycles. It features a performance system that includes a Garrett turbocharger, an air-to-liquid intercooler, electronic boost control, and a specific engine control unit. Paired with a six-speed manual transmission the entire system takes the Apex’s power output to between 275-300 hp, with a maximum boost of 8.5 psi.

The outside of the Apex features a livery based on the Suzuki superbike race design as well as Yokohama S.Drive 245/35-R19 tires. The interior is also race-inspired with a black leather cabin trim and laser blue Alcantara accents on the seats and steering wheel.

Commented Steve Younan: “Our turbo-equipped concept leverages the already-exceptional Kizashi platform and infuses it with a substantial boost. The Kizashi Apex Concept will further elevate our flagship sedan in the U.S. among enthusiasts who crave added power and performance.”
