mid-size pickup truck. While the chassis and some engines are shared, the GMC is meant to be a more luxurious version.
“Not everyone needs full-size capability, but they still deserve strength and true-truck attributes that come in larger models. The Canyon will offer all the capability with confidence – and GMC’s signature refinement that complements active lifestyles,” said Tony DiSalle, head of marketing at GMC.
The Canyon is offered with a choice of two engines. The basic engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 193hp and 184lb-ft of torque. The other option is a 3.6-liter V6 with 302hp and 270lb-ft of torque. The transmission options are either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. However, most cars will get the automatic because the manual is only offered on the base trim with two-wheel drive.
GMC is promising a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine will be added in 2016.
With the V6 engine, the Canyon can hold 1,450lb (657kg) of cargo and tow 6,700lb (3,039kg).
Stylistically, the only major change over the Colorado is a three-slat aluminum grill with aluminum surround and GMC logo.
The luxurious features in the Canyon include an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot through AT&T’s 4G LTE connection and available forward collision alert, lane departure warning and a standard rear-vision camera. The RemoteLink smartphone app allows owners to lock and unlock the doors, flash the lights, honk the horn and start the engine.
The Canyon will be offered in Canyon base, SLE and SLT trims in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Buyers can choose between an extended cab with a 6ft2in bed and a crew cab with either a 6ft2in bed or 5ft2in bed.
Sales will start in mid-2014.
