has developed an accident avoidance system that works at up to 80km/h (49mph).

The system uses front-mounted, millimeter-wave radar to detect impending rear-end collisions with the car ahead. First, it warns the driver with an audible warning, then it displays an alert on the instrument panel, finally it doubles normal braking force to decrease braking distance. If the driver does not react after all of those warnings, it can decrease the car's speed by up to 30km/h on its own.

Toyota claims that the system reduces rear end collisions by more than any other system in the industry. The system will be available in Toyota's upcoming cars.

In the future, Toyota is continuing to research real world accidents to create systems that mitigate or avoid those collisions.
