Skyactiv engines and technology have shown that the future of more efficient cars does not necessarily have to be boring, and it is working on the second generation for 2020 that will boost fuel economy by a further 30%.
"If we want to dramatically improve fuel economy from here, the only route is through lean burning," said Mitsuo Hitomi, Mazda’s head of powertrain development.
The key to Skyactiv 2 is even higher compression ratios to get the most out of every bit of fuel and improve emissions. Mazda is aiming for an 18:1 ratio from 14:1 in the current Skyactiv engines. It will also use stop-start and braking regeneration to further boost economy.
The high compression will mean that the gasoline actually self combusts without a spark like in a diesel engine.
Mazda is already planning the Skyactiv 3 engines for 2025 that will focus on engine heat management to improve volumetric efficiency.
By the time all of its technologies are launched, Mazda hopes to have gasoline engines with efficiency on par with EVs.
