to supply hybrid powertrains and possibly fuel cell powertrains in the future. It appears that this is an offshoot of BMW's deal with Toyota to supply them with diesel engines. BMW and Toyota will make an official statement about the deal later in the week with more details. 

Toyota and BMW have been working together to develop lithium-ion batteries since March, and they announced the deal to share diesel engines in December. 

This deal benefits Toyota by creating larger economies of scale for they hybrid systems and gives them a top-tier client to sell them to. BMW gets the gold standard of modern hybrid powertrains.
