Vettel takes pole as Red Bull starts in the front row in Melbourne

Sebastian Vettel was the fastest in Albert Park's circuit as he took his second pole position of the season. The German driver was followed by his team mate Mark Webber as team Red Bull dominated the qualifying since the beggining.

Throughout the three sessions of the qualifying Adrian Newey's design was the fastest one in Melbourne with Vettel just clinching pole position by one tenth of a second over his team-mate and home hero. Vettel was the only man to run under 1m24s, with a qualifying time of 1m23.919s.

At the end of the qualifying the track started cooling and no one looked to be able to get even near the Red Bulls, with both cars taking the lead early on in the final session of the qualifying.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso seemed the only driver to be able to get close to Red Bull's times. The Spaniard took third place with a time 1m24.111s, two tenths away from Vettel's pole position time. Completing the second row of the starting grid for tomorrow's Australian GP will be reigning champion Jenson Button who's lap was already six thenths of second off the pace.

Felipe Massa will be the fifht driver on the starting grid and will be followed by the Mercedes drivers that struggled to get the best out of the soft tyres. Once again Nico Rosberg was fastest than his team-mate and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

The top ten for tomorrow's start is completed by Williams' Rubens Barrichello, Renault's Robert Kubica, and Force India's Adrian Sutil.

The big shocker in today's qualifying was McLaren's 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton that failed to reach the third session after ending up in eleventh at Q2.

Newcomer Vitaly Petrov was the only driver from the established F1 teams not to qualify for the second qualifying session. The Russian struggled and wasn't capable to follow the pace of his team-mate Robert Kubica that will start almost ten places ahead of him tomorrow.

The newcoming teams cars occupied  the last six spots in the first qualification session. HRT will occupy the last row but the Spanish team managed to get within six seconds of the fastest time of the first qualification session. Bruno Senna was the fastest of the HRT drivers.

In the new teams championship Lotus got once again ahead of the pack. Heikko Kovalainen was the fastest of the green and yellow cars, ahead of team mate Jarno Trulli. Timo Glock was the fastest driver from Virgin Racing.
