The Volkswagen Group has everything it takes to face these challenges and to play a leading role on world markets," said VW Chairman Dr. Martin Winterkorn.

Sales in Eastern Europe, including Russia, is what saved the company. It sold 644,300 in the region, up 17.6%, and sales were up 38.8% in Russia to 317,700 cars. The losses came from Western Europe where sales were down 6.5% to 1.85 million cars, compared to 1.98 million cars last year.
