Volvo Begins Production of New Family of Four-Cylinder Engines

has begun production of its new VEA family of four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines that will begin being sold in Volvo vehicles in autumn. 

Volvo's plan for the new VEA engines is to provide four-cylinder fuel economy with V6 power. Later, it will offer electrified versions that it claims will have the power of a V8 with further improvements in fuel economy.

The new engine family has been under development for the last two years. Not only do they offer better fuel economy, the diesel and petrol versions can be built on the same assembly line. They will replace eight previous Volvo engines when the VEA rollout is complete in 2015. 

"This marks a milestone in Volvo Cars' history. With our new engine family we are focusing on two additional vital properties - driving pleasure and fuel efficiency," said Derek Crabb, Volvo Vice President Powertrain Engineering.

Volvo plans to have 20,000 VEA engines ready by the autumn when they will be offered in the S60Volvo S60 Gen.2Sweden, 2009 > present252 versions
