Volvo to Shutter Swedish Pininfarina Plant in 2013

Volvo to Shutter Swedish Pininfarina Plant in 2013

Unbeknownst to most car fans, Volvo and Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina have been in business together since 2003 producing the C70 at a joint-owned factory in Uddevella, Sweden.

In 2013, Volvo will buy Pininfarina's 60% stake in the factory and close it. Volvo says that the factory is only running at 60% capacity. it produced 10,000 vehicles in 2010. This news would also indicate that Volvo will not be producing a third generation C70. Volvo says that it will offer all of the 600 employees positions at its other factories.

The closing of the Uddevella plant does even more to indicate the shrinking of Volvo. It introduced the second generation S60 last year, but it has not done much since then to introduce new models.

Hmm, that seems kinda unfair. Why didn't they retool the factory to produce another car? Or produce another model in conjunction to the C70?
