are two of the most important brands in the Volkswagen Group family and often show the future of the group. And that future continues to appear to be in Asia, especially China. Both brands saw double-digit sales in China from January to September of this year. Furthermore, Europe continues to be a tough place to do business. Volkswagen has sold 5.7% fewer cars there in the first nine months of the year, and Audi sales are down 1.6% in the same period. Growth for both of them is small enough that the fourth quarter of the year will determine whether they have higher sales this year or not.
Volkswagen has sold 4.36 million cars from January to September, up 3.6% from the same period last year, and it sold 526,300 cars in September, up 6.8%.
"Volkswagen Passenger Cars has held its own well on world markets despite the challenging situation and continued to grow in China in particular," said Christian Klingler, head of sales at VW Group.
Earlier this year, Volkswagen stopped publicizing monthly sales figures and now only publishes figures for the whole year to that point.
The biggest gains came from Asia where Volkswagen has sold 1.95 million cars through September of this year, up 16.5%. Sales in China alone were 1.79 million cars, up 18.2%.
The European market continues to fall with VW Cars sales down 5.7% there to 1.23 million cars.
In North America, sales were up 2.1% to 466,000 cars. Of those, 314,800 were sold in the United States, down 2.6%. Volkswagen Cars has not yet cracked what the market wants in the US. Audi sales continue to grow there, but VW struggles.
South American sales are down 13.4% through September to 542,500 cars. The Brazilian market is down 16.3% to 407,400 cars.
Audi continues to perform well with sales up 7.6% worldwide from January to September with 1,180,750 cars sold and up 10% in September alone at 150,300 cars, which represents a new September sales record for Audi.
We thus continue to perform better in every region around the world than the respective overall automobile market,” said Luca de Meo, Audi head of sales.
Sales in Asia now represent roughly a third of Audi’s worldwide sales each month. It sold 53,580 cars there in September, up 25.2%, and among those 45,530 were sold in China, up 28.2%. The Q3Audi Q3Germany, 2011 > present66 versions

are 72% of Audi’s Chinese sales. Audi sales in Asia through September are up 20.2%.
Sales in the United States grew by 6.2% in September to 13,065 cars. Through September of this year, 114,411 Audis have been sold there, up 13.6%.
Europe is still growing for Audi with sales up 3% to 74,350 cars in September. For the year through September, sales are down slightly by 1.6% to 564,800 cars.
