Mark Webber took his third win of the 2010 World F1 Championship season at the renewed Silverstone track. In British soil the Aussie took the lead in the beginning of the race went on to cross the checkered flag ahead of Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button.
In a weekend marked by a front wing controversy within team Red Bull Webber got the best response to it claiming yet another victory and passing his team-mate in the driver’s standings. As for Vettel, the German started the race in pole-position but after a slower start than Webber he had a puncture, potentially the result of a slight touch from Hamilton's McLaren at the first corner. As a result of the flatten tyre he went off-track at Becketts which put him last place at the end of the first lap. The German would eventually recover up to seventh place.
The controversy continued in the British Grand Prix with the stewards awarding a drive-through penalty to Alonso after considering he passed Robert Kubica by going off the track. This took the Spaniard away from the points as the pack had just regrouped after the presence of the Safety Car after a contact between Adrian Sutil (Force India) and Pedro de la Rosa (Sauber) that left chunks of the latter's rear wing on the track.
The Safety Car was the turning point for Vettel’s race as the German had made little progress until that point of the race. After the regrouping he started overtaking slower drivers with spectacular passes, including one on Michael Schumacher. Vettel had a lot of work to surpass Adrian Sutil. The Force India driver managed to battle for his position for many laps, but ended up being overtaken on the penultimate lap, settling for eighth place, ahead of Michael Schumacher and Nico Hulkenberg.
At the front Webber was away from all the excitement, delivering a strong and solid performance ahead of the pack. Hamilton managed to follow the Aussie until the pitstops but then was unable to tag along Webber’s rhythm.
As for Nico Rosberg, the German brought Mercedes GP back to the podium finishes after some scrappy results in the previous races. He managed a strong run despite losing a barge board in a small touch with Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari.
Just outside the podium was McLaren’s Jenson Button who managed to climb up to fourth spot after starting the race in 14th. As for Rubens Barrichello he clinched his team’s second top-five finish in a row ahead of Sauber’s Kobayashi, who gave his team the best result of the season so far.
Alonso would end the race in 14th place, after he sustained a puncture in a brush with Tonio Liuzzi's Force India, just ahead of his team-mate Felipe Massa who had a very troubled race.
After the British Grand Prix the Drivers’ Standings are topped by the two McLaren drivers, with Hamilton on top with 145 points, twelve more than Button. Mark Webber overtook his team-mate in the championship and now stands in third place with a lead of seven points over Sebastian Vettel. In the Constructors’ standings McLaren leads ahead of Red Bull with Ferrari in third spot.
