History

Daihatsu started as Hatsudoki Seizo Co. founded in March 1st, 1907, a manufacturer of internal-combustion engines.

The first car model released by the company was the HA, launched in 1930. It was followed in the next year by the HB Model and 6 years later by a small four-wheel car, the FA Model.

No new models were launched until 1951, the year that the name was changed to Daihatsu Motor Company. In October that year, the BEE, a three-wheel car goes on sale.

The first berlina, named 800, was launched in 1964 and the first sporst car, CompagnoDaihatsu CompagnoJapan, 1964 > 19702 versions
, was released in 1965. The research and development of electric cars starts in that same year. In 1967, Daihatsu signs a business tie-up with ToyotaToyotaToyotaJapan, 1937 > present155 models

. Currently Toyota owns 51.2% shares.

Since then, Daihatsu has regularly launched car models and experimented with electric and hybrid vehicles.  In the late 1960s started to export to the European market and in 1992, it entered the US market

In January 2011, Daihatsu announced that it was pulling out of Europe until 2013, because the Yen has grown stronger and the sales were no longer profitable.
