History, development and general characteristics

Honda released the sixth generation Civic in 1996. The new model kept its previous counterparts’ renowned handling. A significant facelift, including exterior and interior improvements, was made to the Civic for 1999.
The sixth generation model was produced until 2000 at several Honda plants, namely in Japan, United States, Canada, England, Brazil, South Africa and Pakistan. It would then be replaced by a new Civic model.

Engine and Transmission

The 6th Honda Civic comes with either front- or four-wheel drive, depending on the trim level chosen. Its front-mounted engine was available with two displacement capacity options, 1.5 and 1.6 litres, but in several versions and different power outputs.

Most of the variants were available with either a standard 5-speed transmission with hydraulic clutch or an optional 4-speed automatic unit. One of the trim level versions was also available with an optional CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), which offered three driving ranges.

Body and Design

The sixth generation Honda Civic could be found in several different body shapes: 2-door coupes, 2-door convertibles, 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, 4-door sedans and 4-door wagons were produced under the Civic nameplate.
In 1999 the Civic’s bodywork underwent a significant restyling from which resulted new headlamps, front bumper and grille, as well as revised fenders and taillights.
