History

Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH was founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son, Karl Maybach. The company was actually known as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH until 1912.

Wilhelm Maybach was the technical director of Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft until 1907, where he built the first Mercedes, and became known as “the King of Engineers”. Due to problems with the new Daimler’s management at the time, Whilhelm decided to leave the company. Two years later, he started Maybach as a manufacturer of engines for Zeppelins.

First Car

Maybach’s first car was W3, presented in Berlin in 1921. From the beginning, Karl Maybach knew that he didn’t wanted to produce cars for the average person, and since the very first car, to now, Maybachs have always been luxury cars with high technical standards.

The first Maybach 12, with 12 cylinders, was launched in 1929. It is one of the best known Maybach models.

Until 1940, Maybach produced limousines, pullmann-cabriolets, sports cabriolets and four-door cabriolets. After the World War II, Maybach didn’t resume production and 20 years later, in 1960, it was purchased by Daimler.

Modern Maybach

The make was revived in 1997, when the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show. Daimler wanted a brand that could rival with Rolls-Royce and Bentley and decided to market luxury cars under the Maybach badge.

In 2002, two new models were presented, the 57 and the 62 and in 2005, the range was extended with the S versions of both models. New models have been released since, varying the body type.

Nowadays, Maybachs are produced at the Center of Excellence in Sinderlfingen, Germany.
