Built at the Ujina 1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, the CX-9 is a full-size crossover SUV model from Mazda. It is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configuration.

The model is based on the Ford CD3 Platform, which it shares with the Ford Edge. The CX-9 uses the same 3.7L V6 engine used in the Ford lineup. Although they look very similar the CX-7 and CX-9 do not share platforms.

For the 2010 model year, the CX-9 received a facelift which was presented at the 2009 New York Auto Show. The revised version included a new grille.
