Mazda has revealed at this year's Los Angeles Motor Show a new crossover model for the US market, the CX-9. The model shows the next evolution of the Kodo design language into a more premium design execution. It won't be marketed in Europe.
In terms of design the CX-9 shows how the models at Mazda will evolve with the introduction of a 3D effect on the grille and the way it runs backwards into the bonnet line and into the shoulder line. The new generation replaces the 10 year model, which was the last of the old Ford-based models.
With some styling cues from the Koeru concept car unveiled in Frankfurt, in September. Compared to the previous generation of the CX-9, the new model is more agressive. Inside the CX-9 gets the same look as the smaller
CX-5 and
CX-3 by getting a free-standing infotainment screen on the centre console, operated via a rotary controller. However it features more premium materials to cope with its range-topping position.
The new CX-9 will be powered by a new 2.5-litre 250hp SkyActiv-G petrol engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Mazda says the new engine is the most powerful unit in its line-up. The CX-9 will also be available with the option of all-wheel drive, and will receive Mazda's i-Activesense suite of safety technologies.
Sales of the CX-9 will start in the US next spring. Despite the growing appetite for SUVs and crossovers, there are currently no plans to sell the new Mazda CX-9 in Europe.
