Introduced by BMW in 1999, the BMW X5 is a luxury crossover SUV, which is currently in its second generation.

The X5 was BMW's first SUV and features the all-wheel drive which is branded as the "X" drive system. The second generation X5 was launched in 2006, and in 2009 an M version was announced.

Rather than a SUV, BMW describes the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) in order to emphasize its on-road ability despite its size. As it happens with the Lexus RX 300 and Mercedes M-Class, the X5 skipped from truck-based body-on-frame SUVs to sedan-based crossovers.
