Toyota Returning to Le Mans in 2012 with Hybrid LMP1 Coupe

Toyota will enter the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans with a hybrid petrol LMP1 car. The chassis will be built by Toyota Motorsport GmbH in Germany who also ran Toyota's Formula 1 team while the engine will be made by Toyota in Japan. 

The car will also be entered FIA World Endurance Championship, which is the new name for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup.

This is not Toyota's first foray into the highest class of sports car racing. The Toyota GT-One was a fantasically unsuccesful sports car. It was entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times setting three fastest laps and taking two poles, but it never won its class.

Hopefully, Toyota is able to produce a car that is as fast as the GT-One but more reliable.
