*Update: Mark Webber will receive a 10-spot grid penalty for the next race, the Korean Grand Prix, for entering the track on foot without the marshals' permission. Webber's car broke down on the final lap of the race. On his cool-down lap, Fernando Alonso picked him up and transported Webber back to the pits while sitting on Alonso's Ferrari. Because it is Webber's third reprimand this season, he will receive the penalty. Alonso also received a reprimand from the stewards for pulling off track to pick up Webber, but he received no penalty.*
What is going to stop Sebastian Vettel's command of Formula 1? He led every lap and except for briefly during the first corner, held the lead for the entire race, including pit stops. Fernando Alonso used great pit strategy to come in second, and Kimi Raikkonen went from qualifying 13th to finishing third by storming through the ranks in the second half of the race.
Vettel started on pole for the third time in a row at the Singapore Grand Prix. Nico Rosberg started beside him and was only a tenth slower in qualifying. Romain Grosjean was the big surprise in third.
Rosberg had the lead briefly in the first corner by forcing Vettel over, but Vettel attacked back and was in the lead again by the second corner. Alonso had a great start to move from seventh to third midway through the first lap. Vettel's lead in the very first lap was 1.971 seconds. It appeared that it would be another race where Vettel would drive away in front.
Positions stayed basically the same through lap 15 when the cars began coming in for their first pit stops. Vettel had a 7.7 seconds lead over Rosberg, and Alonso was another three seconds behind Rosberg. Vettel came in at the start of lap 18 and retook the lead. Rosberg and Alonso were still behind him.
The safety car came out on lap 25 due to a crash from Daniel Ricciardo. It destroyed Vettel's 10.9-second lead over Rosberg. Most of the drivers streamed into the pits for new tires; Vettel remained out. The running order behind the safety car after the pit stops was Vettel, Rosberg, Webber, Hamilton and Alonso. The cars were separated enough that there were no big moves when racing resumed on lap 31. At the end of lap 32, Vettel had already pulled out a 3.2 second lead over Rosberg.
Romain Grosjean retired on lap 40 because his car's hydraulic valve system lost pressure.
Vettel pitted on lap 45 but had such a massive lead that he resumed on first place. Because he did so few qualifying laps, he had a new set of super soft tires to put on.
In the final ten laps, good pit strategy put Vettel, Alonso and Button in the top of the running order. Alonso and Button both took advantage of the safety car to swap tires and carry them to the end. Vettel had a 14.9-second lead on lap 53. Kimi Raikkonen was rapidly catching up to Button, and Raikkonen cut the gap to half a second.
Raikkonen made the pass on Button on lap 55 and pushed him out of the way to nearly cause a crash. It moved Raikkonen up to third after qualifying 13th. Later that lap, Paul di Resta ran into the wall to bring out a yellow flag but no safety car.
Button continued to fall down the order, when Webber passed him to take fourth place. The gap between Webber and Raikkonen was about six seconds with four laps to go.
On the final lap, Webber reported gearbox trouble and started nursing the car to the finish line. He reported no power and puffs of smoke were coming from the back of the car. The car caught fire midway through the lap, and Webber had to abandon it.
The win extended Vettel's lead in the World Drivers' Championship to 247 points over Fernando Alonso with 187 points. Nico Hulkenberg moves up one stop to 13th in points due to Ricciardo not finishing the race.
Red Bull still leads the World Constructors' Championship with 377 points over Ferrari with 274 points. There were no changes in the championship standings.
