Bosch Straps Hybrid Unit to Aston Martin DB9 for Testing

It claims better fuel economy and faster acceleration

with two modular hybrid electric motors that it claims increased acceleration and gave 25.75km of pure electric range.

A plug-in hybrid battery pack powers the electric motors, and the car’s normal 6.0-liter V12 is still under the hood. The electric motors are positioned in the front wheels making this the first all-wheel drive Aston Martin. The battery pack is located in the rear of the car. It batteries, motors and their wiring add about 300kg (661lb) to the DB9, which brings the curb weight over 2,000kg (4,409lb). However, Bosch says that the motors boost power from 510hp to over 740hp.

According to Bosch’s tests, the hybrid DB9 accelerates to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, 20% quicker than the standard car. The motors also allow for torque vectoring on the front axle, which sharpens handling.

The stability control system can connect to the Internet to download the optimum settings for a variety of racetracks. The settings are displayed on an interior TFT screen.

Aston Martin says that this system will not be put into production, but it shows what is possible with Bosch’s modular hybrid system with relatively little development.
