Chevrolet will build 69 special COPO Camaros this year that are constructed specifically for NHRA Stock Eliminator and Super Stock drag racing. It claims that the car will run the quarter mile in the nine second range, which should make the new COPO cars the fastest Camaros ever offered by Chevy.
The new COPO cars can only be offered in body-in-white shells. They do not come with VIN numbers and cannot be registered for the road. The engine options are either a 7.0l V8 or two tunes of a 5.3l, supercharged V8. All cars get a Powerglide automatic transmission that is built and strengthened specifically for drag racing. Prices start at $89,000. There will also be a special edition version of the new COPO that comes with all three available engine with one of them already installed.
Mechanically, the new COPO Camaro has a solid, rear axle, full roll cage, far less sound deadening than the standard car, no power accessories, racing seats with safety harness, competition shifter and Chevy Performance gauges
COPO was a special ordering process from Chevy in the 60s that allowed clever dealers to order cars to be specially made. In 1969 there were 69 COPO Camaros built with the ZL-1 engine that was supposed to be only available in the top Corvette that year. It became among the rarest and fastest Camaros ever built.
