is pushing its renewable and sustainable qualities. The Fusion uses sustainable materials for the seats and sound absorption. It will also use recycled cotton, recycled plastic and soybeans to create interior materials for the cars.
“With every new product design, we also are charged with increasing the use of renewable and recyclable materials in our cars, utilities and trucks to reduce impact on the environment," said Carrie Majeske, Ford product sustainability manager.
The sound-deadening material is made from recycled cotton plus a mix of conventional sound deadening foam. Each new Fusion is made from roughly the amount of material for two pairs of jeans in recycled cotton.
The seats are made from REPREVE yarn that is made from chopped, melted and extruded plastic and save the equivalent of 38.9 16oz bottles for each car. Excess fabric is remelted to prevent waste.
The foam used in the seats is made from a soy-based material, and 31,250 soybeans are used in each car's interior. With the Fusion, Ford will use this material on every car it offers, and it says that it saves 5 million pounds of petroleum and reduced carbon dioxide emissions during production by 20 million pounds.
The Fusion also uses recycled plastic to build its battery casings, fender splash shields and underbody components. Ford will use 2 million pounds of recycled plastic on the Fusion each year.
