Honda chose the Tokyo Motor Show to unveil the successor of the
FCX Clarity. The
FCV Clarity is the new fuel cell model of the brand and arrives in March to the Japanese market.
The United States and Europe are also markets where you may buy the new hydrogen fuel cell model. However, Honda will make customers of these markets wait until 2017 in order to drive the FCV Clarity.
The successor of the FCX Clarity was unveiled gradually by Honda. The first concept was shown in 2013 at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the FCV. A second concept would be unveiled in Japan last year.
The FCV Clarity is driven by an electric motor which develops over 136hp, with the power density increasing by 60%, compared to the FCX. The size of the fuel cell stack was reduced by 33%. This reduction enables the FCV Clarity to be the first model in which the engine and hydrogen fuel cells are placed in the engine bay.
According to Honda the new model allows a range of 700km and can be refueled with hydrogen in just three minutes. The Japanese version even allows the vehicle to supply electricity to homes as an emergency generator.
In order to the hydrogen technology to expand it also needs a charging infrastructure. Honda recently opened a hydrogen recharging station that is solar-operated and can produce 20 tons of hydrogen a year. This station will be the starting point for the creation of an infrastructure in the UK for the charging of such vehicles and is integrated in the UKH2Mobility government program.
