The new engine is the Si4 2.0-liter petrol with turbocharging and direct injection that produces 240ps and 340Nm of torque. It emits 224g/km of CO2. It replaces the previous Si6 naturally aspirated V6. The new four-cylinder is more powerful but produces 14% less CO2. The engine will not be available in the UK.

The other major news for the upgrade is that Land Rover is making Evoque equipment available on the Freelander. That means that the car gets a better interior with a wider array of available colors, a new center console, a new 7in color touch screen infotainment system, a 825W sound system with 17 speakers, and rear view camera. The car now comes with a smart key that drivers can leave in their pocket.

The Freelander also gets an adaptive parking brake that adjusts the force of the electric parking brake depending on the vehicle’s slope.

The exterior also gets some work. The changes include new front lights and LED rear lights. It also gets new 17in wheels on the base level cars

"The Freelander 2's equipment levels bring a more premium look and feel to the overall driving experience. In addition, our customers continue to benefit from our refined and economical range of diesel engines and can now opt for the powerful and highly efficient new Si4 GTDi petrol. It's another step forward for the Freelander 2 where outstanding equipment levels, superb design, safety and all-terrain capability continue to set the standards in this class,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director.
