"I don't believe in the electric cars, but I strongly believe in hybrids," said di Montezemolo.
Di Montezemolo also went into more detail about Ferrari's future production plans. The company intends to build fewer cars at higher prices and more personalization in the future to keep its brand exclusive, and brand licensing will play a larger role. For this year, the plan is to build about 400 fewer cars, which will net a total 2013 production of about 6,900 cars.
"I want to have different Ferraris for different Ferraristi. We have a lot of parallel activities that can increase revenues without being obliged to produce more cars," said Montezemolo.
The plan to raise prices is already working. In the first half of 2013, Ferrari's earnings before taxes and interest is 15% of its sales revenue, up from 13% in the first half of 2012.
The decision to lower production and rely more on licensing has its risks. It forces Ferrari to be successful in racing so that its name is still synonymous with success and speed.
