Since its inception the Land Rover Discovery 4 has won 36 awards. The 2012 model year car aims to build on this success with increased efficiency, power and luxury. 3 new option packs are offered, as are some distinctive styling features.
Land Rover has increased the performance of its TDV6 engine significantly. The high power version now produces 256 ps, up from 245 ps, while the 211 ps engine has seen its Co2 emissions drop from 244 g/Km to 224 g/Km. The new TDV6 has also reduced its thirst for fuel with an improvement of 3 mpg to 33.4 mpg. Torque has also raised to 520 Nm in the standard engine and 600 Nm with the higher powered STDV6. The car also retains its 5.0l V8 engine which is both EU5 and US ULEV2 compliant.
A new 8 speed gearbox also improves economy and performance. It will be available in EU5 compliant markets and will use the same style of rotary gear selector and paddles that has been seen in the new Jaguar XJ. The 8 speed gearbox’s party piece is its ability to skip up to 6 gear ratios in one go.
The most notable feature of the 2012 Discovery 4 is the focus on performance and economy. Land Rover calls these green features e_TERRAIN technologies. Included within this envelope is the Diesel Particulate Filter, newly optimised engine calibration, a reduced slip torque converter, clutched air conditioning pump and improved aerodynamics.
Land Rover has imbued the Discovery with more stopping power to compliment the added pace. The brakes have been upgraded to 360 mm ventilated units at the front and 350 mm ventilated at the back, furthermore Land Rover has linked this to their under steer control system. Gradient Acceleration Control makes a debut providing safety cover when hill descent is not engaged and works in both forwards and reverse. The new brakes are encased in new 19” wheels that come standard with the HSE or optional new 20” wheels.
There are 3 more option packs to tempt customers. The first is the Technology Pack which offers Premium Navigation, front and rear cameras and Land Rovers new ‘say what you see’ voice control system. Secondly they are offering the HSE lux pack which includes xenon adaptive headlights, Logic 7 Harmon Kardon, premium leather pack, full length satin black roof rails, sun roof and an electric steering column. Finally, there is the Vision assist pack which offers automatic xenon headlights, surround view cameras and tow and hitch assist.
