Porsche’s plant in Leipzig has been chosen to become the production site of the fifth model line of the German brand. The supervisory board has decided that the Saxony plant will be fully responsible for building the new model which currently features the project designation “Cajun”.
Thanks tothis confirmation Leipzig will be creating at least one thousand new jobs, with additional new jobs also being created at Porsche in Zuffenhausen and Weissach. Still not confirmed is the start of construction work which has been scheduled for 2011.
“During the production of the Cayenne and the Panamera, our Leipzig plant has impressively proved that it can produce premium vehicles of highest quality,” says Matthias Müller, chairman of the Porsche AG board of management. “The decision in favour of this location is proof of our trust in the skills and qualifications of our Leipzig associates, and at the same time another contribution to the economic advancement of the region.”
With the “Cajun” Porsche will be extending its SUV segment which started with the very successful Cayenne. With the new generation of the Cayenne, Porsche was able to strengthen its market position as one of the most successful sporty off-road vehicles in the premium segment. The light and easy-to-handle “Cajun” is expected to further increase this share and to attract new and even younger customers to Porsche, together with the Boxster.
Currently the Leipzig plant, located in the Saxony region, is the production site of the Cayenne (since 2002) and the Gran Turismo Panamera four-seater (since 2009). Porsche’s Leipzig site represents, until today, an investment of around €280 million.
