Peugeot has today unveiled the new supermini model of the French brand that will be launched in the spring of 2012. The new 208, the successor of iconic models such as the 205, 206 and 207, is reinventing their principles, or as the brand calls it, ‘re-generating’. The 208 will be available in 3 and 5-door hatchback body styles.
According to Xavier Peugeot, Marketing and Communication Director, of Automobiles Peugeot: "The 208 is a new illustration of the Marque’s project launched two years ago, representing a new stage in Peugeot's desire to drive itself towards ever greater modernity."
Architecturally, the 208 has been re-generated with improvements in agility and efficiency. The 208 is on average 110kg lighter than the 207, but the difference in some cases rises to -173kg. The new model is very compact (-7cm in length, -1cm in height) and aerodynamic (Cd of 0.29, CdA of 0.61). But still Peugeot managed to offer in the new 208 an increased occupant space, with more room in the rear seatsand a more generous boot, proving the optimized architectural performance.
In terms of style, the 208 embodies the new aesthetic codes of the Marque but also refines them. ‘Floating’ grille, light signature, ‘boomerang’ rear lamps have been integrated in the car’s architecture, but both body styles received an entirely different treatment.
The new 208 features an average CO2 emissions of 34g/km. This value is lower than the 207 and puts the new model as the leader in its segment. The e-HDi micro-hybrid system that will be used on almost every versions and the latest generation engine technology also contribute to improvements in terms of weight reduction and aerodynamics.
The 208 will introduce a new range of 3-cylinder petrol engines, a 1.0- and a 1.2-litre VTi. These engines are particularly efficient, with a range starting at 99g/km of CO2.
