Sebastian Vettel scored his first win of the 2013 F1 season in Malaysia but maybe at the expense of any friendship with Mark Webber after Vettel ignored team orders. Further down the grid, MercedesMercedes-Benz W04Germany, 2013 > 20133 photos
had similar problems with team orders placing Nico Rosberg behind Lewis Hamilton after the men scrapped for several laps.
The argument between Vettel and Webber came in the last laps of the race. Red BullRed Bull RB9Austria, 2013 > 201310 photos
had ordered that the teams hold positions with Webber in front. Despite the order, Vettel continued to push and passed Webber to take the win. Webber still came in second.
The problem possibly comes from earlier in the race when Webber was leading but slower than Vettel. Vettel asked the team for him to move over, but Webber found his speed and built a further lead over Vettel.
With third and fourth finishes, Mercedes had similar problems with team orders. In the second half of the race, Rosberg and Hamilton had similar issues. They passed each other in the DRS zones for several laps. Eventually the team intervened and told them to hold position. This forced Rosberg into fourth place and denied him a podium. Hamilton finished third.
The highlights of the race were not isolated to the top places. At the start of the race, Fernando Alonso was challenging for the lead but clipped the rear of Vettel's car to destroy his wing. He stayed out, but the wing collapsed while Webber passed him. He crashed out of the race.
Jenson Button was as high the lead for a few laps, but a bungled tire change ruined his race. The right front wheel was not put on tight enough, and his team had to roll him back to the pits to tighten it. He lost about two minutes in the incident.
