has made the odd decision to unveil a European-focused concept at the LA Auto Show. The Edge ConceptFord Edge ConceptUnited States of America, 2015 > 2015 show’s the next generation Edge SUV that will be Ford’s largest SUV offering in Europe, while it is Ford’s second smallest in the United States.
“The Ford Edge Concept is the latest example of a utility vehicle that delivers the attributes global customers value most – design; fuel efficiency, driving dynamics, and customer-focused technology to help the driver feel more confident,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of the Americas.
Ford says that the Edge Concept gives a strong indication on the look of the next generation Edge, while also showing off new technologies like push-button, remote parking from inside or outside the car.
The concept shows a vehicle with Ford’s modern, compact look with a massive chrome grill, given the size of the car. The grill sloped backward to the hood and features active shutters. Air curtains pull air through the front out of the wheel wells and down the side to improve aerodynamics.
The interior of the concept is lit with blue LEDs and features a leather-covered instrument panel, 10in touchscreen infotainment display and Ford SYNC with voice control. The seats are covered in a mix of fabric and leather. Other than the blue LEDs, it is quite attractive.
European models will come standard with a higher level of equipment than American versions because it is what buyers tend to buy. It will be offered with an obstacle avoidance system that detects slow-moving objects around the car and can automatically steer around them and brake automatically. It also has adaptive power steering that lightens the steering weight at low speeds.
The new generation will be the second generation Edge in the US and has been on sale since 2006. It will slot above the Kuga in Europe. It is one of the 25 global vehicles that Ford will have on sale in Europe by 2017. The SUV market in Europe has doubled from 2005 to 2012, and Ford is estimating 22% more growth in the next five years.
